Highlight new chat messages better

Is it possible to display new chat messages more clearly and prominently?
After Chat it says NEW, which only indicates the new function. However, it would be good if a conspicuous display appeared after Chat to indicate that there are new messages, perhaps like in the Outlook inbox...?
